Blockout blinds (also commonly called blackout blinds) are designed to significantly reduce incoming light using a tightly woven, opaque fabric with a blackout backing. When fitted correctly, they help darken a room, cut glare, and reduce heat gain from direct sunlight

At Blinds Online, our blockout blinds are made to measure and built using reliable operating systems and quality components. This ensures smooth operation, consistent fabric alignment, and long-term performance — not the sagging, fraying, or mechanism failures often seen with cheaper alternatives

While standard blockout blinds greatly reduce light, they are not fully sealed at the edges. Some light bleed around the sides is normal with this style. Because each blind is custom-made, typical manufacturing time is 2–3 weeks. This allows for accurate sizing, proper assembly, and quality control — not rushed, mass-produced shortcuts

Once complete, delivery usually takes 1–4 working days, depending on your location

How to measure for blockout / blackout blinds

Accurate measuring is key to getting blockout blinds that fit well and perform as expected. We provide downloadable PDF measuring guides for all common installation types — including inside fit and outside fit options — which you’ll find at the bottom of this section. On-screen below, we outline the most common approach: inside fit, where the blind sits neatly within the window jamb

Measure in 3 steps

1. Measure width (3 places)

Measure the inside width of the window jamb using a tape measure. Take measurements at three points: At the top, In the middle, Near the bottom, Use the smallest width measurement in millimetres. This allows for any variation in the window frame and ensures the blind will operate smoothly without binding Always measure inside edge to inside edge (wood to wood), keeping the tape measure level

2. Measure drop (once)

When measuring the drop for blockout blinds, we’re not nearly as fussy as we are with width. The blind is always made with extra fabric on the roll, so the exact drop measurement is forgiving. You only need to measure the drop once, from the top inside edge of the jamb down to the sill or floor. The key here isn’t precision at multiple points – it’s reading the tape correctly. Measuring the width three times forces you to slow down and double-check the tape; with the drop measured once, just take a moment to read it carefully and record the measurement in millimetres

3. Enter your blockout blind measurements

When requesting a quote, enter your measurements as width × drop (mm). If you’re choosing our SERVICE option, approximate measurements are fine at this stage — final measurements will be taken onsite before manufacture. If you’re ordering DIY, we recommend entering accurate measurements from the outset. You’ll be prompted to double-check measurements before proceeding, but getting them right from the beginning helps build confidence and ensures the blind is made correctly the first time. Providing clear, accurate measurements is key to achieving a neat fit, smooth operation, and proper light control

Easy install

With the instructions below, you’ll have your blackout blinds installed easily and correctly. Most blockout blinds are installed inside the window jamb, which is what the steps below cover

1. Preparation

You’ll need a screwdriver or drill with bit, pencil, tape measure, and a step ladder for most windows

We supply screws suitable for inside fit installations into timber. For outside fit installations, screw requirements vary depending on the wall or substrate — refer to the relevant installation PDF for guidance

Unpack your blind carefully and ensure all brackets and components are present before starting

2. Fit the brackets

Each blind has two brackets:

  • One control-side bracket (chain side)

  • One pin-end bracket (non-control side)

Hold the brackets in position inside the window jamb, thinking about:

  • The desired jamb depth for the blind

  • Clearance from window handles or latches

  • Ensuring the blind will sit level

Mark screw positions with a pencil.
Drill pilot holes if required (recommended near edges or harder timber), then fix the brackets securely in place using the supplied screws

3. Fit the blackout blind

If you prefer, you can leave the blind in its protective plastic wrapping and cut the ends free so it can be clipped into the brackets. Otherwise, ensure your hands are clean and free of oils when handling the blind — this is especially important for white and lighter-coloured fabrics

Insert the control side first, ensuring the chain hangs freely

Make sure the guarded section, where the control chain enters the control mechanism, is level front to back — this is critical for correct operation and safety

Keep pressure applied so the blind stays seated on the control-side bracket as you move to the opposite side, retract the spring-loaded pin, and guide it into the pin-end bracket until it clicks securely into position

Once the blind is fully seated, remove the packaging, lower the blind fully, test operation, and fit the chain-stopper beads

When blinds are measured correctly, installed properly, and used as intended, they’re designed to provide reliable light control, privacy, and comfort for years

What’s not covered

As with all window furnishings, the warranty does not apply to issues caused by:

  • Incorrect measuring or installation

  • Misuse, negligence, or accidental damage

  • Improper maintenance

  • Normal wear and tear over time

Please note: some colour fading or minor fabric movement is normal over the life of a blockout blind, particularly under New Zealand’s high UV conditions. This is expected and not considered a defect

If something goes wrong

If a fault does occur:

  • Start by sending us a clear photo and brief description of the issue. In many cases we can assist remotely or supply the appropriate replacement component without needing the blind returned

  • If a return is required, the purchaser is responsible for returning the blind to Blinds Online (at their own expense)

  • Warranty assessment and outcomes are determined by Blinds Online, based on normal use and installation conditions

Ryan was a pleasure to deal with, he answered all queries promptly and advised on options to suit our budget. He was not at all pushy but once we had decided on the products he got the blinds ordered and delivered ASAP, there was an issue with damage in transit but this was sorted with minimal delay

I would definitely recommend this company and I would use them again. The fact they are based in Auckland and we are in Tauranga was not an issue. we were wary of sub standard products so did a lot of research first before finding the right one

The best endorsement is to say this is our 3rd job done by Ryan. He gave us a reasonable estimated delivery date at a reasonable cost. We were desperate to have it in half the time. Ryan made it happen. His installer worked past midnight to install. Subsequently we found minor defects in 2 of the 20 or so blockout blinds. We asked Ryan about these 2 only. Without hesitation he had 2 new pieces made

He personally came to install the 2 blockout blinds and in doing so actually found that the remainder were not to his high standards and removed ALL for a re-manufacture. Then he came again personally 2 more times to get it JUST RIGHT. He didn't whinge, dodge, make excuses or ask for more money. It cannot have been good on his margins

We offered to make pay him for his time and he turned it down. We are blown away to find that there are still people with this kind of meticulousness and integrity. Blinds Online will certainly continue to have my and my family's business and will continue to be recommended to friends
