At night, this effect is reversed somewhat. With interior lights on and darkness outside, sunscreen blinds do not provide full night-time privacy — visibility from outside becomes more noticeable, often appearing as silhouettes or blurred shapes

How to measure for sunscreen blinds

Accurate measuring ensures your sunscreen blinds sit neatly, operate smoothly, and deliver the right balance of light control and visibility. The process is straightforward, and we provide downloadable PDF guides for all common installation types — inside fit and outside fit — linked at the bottom of this section. Below is the most common approach: inside fit, where the blind sits inside the window jamb

Measure in 3 steps

1. Measure width (3 places)

Measure the inside width of the window jamb using a tape measure. Take measurements at three points — top, middle, and bottom — and record the smallest width in millimetres. This accounts for any variation in the window opening and helps ensure the blind runs freely without rubbing or binding. Measure inside edge to inside edge (wood to wood), keeping the tape level

2. Measure drop (once)

Measure the drop once only, from the top inside edge of the jamb down to the sill or desired finished point. Unlike width, drop measurement is more forgiving — sunscreen blinds are manufactured with extra fabric on the roll, so precision at multiple points isn’t required. Take your time reading the tape measure and record the measurement clearly in millimetres

3. Enter your sunscreen blind measurements

When requesting a quote, enter measurements as width × drop (mm). DIY orders — enter your exact measurements. Service option — approximate measurements are fine initially; final measurements will be confirmed onsite before manufacture. Getting measurements right from the outset helps ensure a neat fit, smooth operation, and proper light control — without delays or adjustments later

Easy install — inside fit made simple

Sunscreen blinds are straightforward to install, especially for standard inside-fit windows. The steps below cover the most common installation method — with downloadable PDFs available further down this section for alternative installs

Most customers choose inside fit for a neat finish and reliable operation, but outside-fit options (on or above the architrave) are also supported

1. Preparation

You’ll need a drill or screwdriver, pencil, tape measure, and a step ladder for most windows

We supply the brackets required for your sunscreen blind. Screws suitable for inside-fit installations into timber are also included

For outside-fit installations, fixing requirements can vary depending on the wall substrate (plasterboard, masonry, concrete, etc.). Your local hardware store can advise on the most suitable fixings for your specific situation — refer to the relevant outside-fit installation PDF for guidance

2. Fit the brackets

Each sunscreen roller blind has two brackets:

  • Control-side bracket (chain side)

  • Pin-end bracket (non-control side)

Hold the brackets in position inside the window jamb, thinking about:

  • The desired jamb depth for the blind

  • Where the fabric will hang when lowered

  • Clearance from window handles or latches

  • Ensuring the blind will sit level

Mark fixing points with a pencil. Drill pilot holes if required (near edges or harder timber), then secure both brackets firmly using the supplied screws

3. Fit the sunscreen blind

Insert the control side first, ensuring the chain hangs freely

Make sure the guarded section (where the control chain enters the control mechanism) is level front to back — critical for correct operation and safety

Keep gentle pressure so the blind stays seated on the control-side bracket as you move to the opposite side. Retract the spring-loaded pin, guide it into the pin-end bracket, until it clicks into place

Once seated, remove any packaging, lower the blind fully, test operation, and fit the chain-stopper beads

Please note: minor colour change or subtle fabric movement can occur over the life of sunscreen blinds, particularly in strong sunlight. This is normal under New Zealand conditions and is not considered a defect

  • Start by sending us a clear photo and brief description of the issue. In many cases we can assist remotely or supply the appropriate replacement component without needing the blind returned

Excellent service, thoroughly recommend. We decided to get the windows and doors measured as we required about 17 blinds so didn’t want to make a mistake especially as we were mid renovations. Ryan had a local contact he could use who also fitted the blinds

Ryan was a pleasure to deal with, he answered all queries promptly and advised on options to suit our budget. He was not at all pushy but once we had decided on the products he got the blinds ordered and delivered ASAP, there was an issue with damage in transit but this was sorted with minimal delay. I would definitely recommend this company and I would use them again

The fact they are based in Auckland and we are in Tauranga was not an issue. we were wary of sub standard products so did a lot of research first before finding the right one

The local installer he used was fantastic, great attention to detail and very knowledgeable, came and did a pre installation measure and gave us some great advice around what to expect with sunscreen roller blinds

We chose the full service option, with measuring and installation handled by a professional. We were looking for some sunscreen roller blinds to cut down the heat coming through two windows in different rooms. Ryan was very flexible, offering alternatives based on what we said at the outset and then revising them once the windows had been measured

He kept me up to date with the progress and took the time to check in again after installation to make sure that everything was to our satisfaction. The local blind installer was also great, arriving promptly as arranged and handling the work with no fuss. Three days later and the sunscreen blinds are working perfectly, providing privacy and cutting the heat down whilst still keeping the light coming through

I'm glad I decided to deal with Blinds Online. I'd give the top marks for everything - communication, quality and overall experience. First we arranged I'd pick the sunscreen blind up when ready, however it was delivered with no extra charge. Dimensions - precise up to millimeter

Apparently my sunscreen blind is longer that typical, so some other companies requested surcharge and provided no guarantee, but Blind Online stand for their product and provide guarantee regardless of dimensions

The sunscreen blind fabric is great, metal chain, rigid, even the brackets of a matching colour. I have no hesitations to recommend this business to anyone who needs top quality sunscreen blinds for a reasonable price and on time
